Curriculum Early Years

The Metropolitan Kindergarten welcomes boys and girls aged between 3 and 6. Here, children will learn in a safe, welcoming and warm atmosphere provided by our early years teachers who use the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). More information can be found on the IB PYP website. The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child, in the classroom but also in the world outside. It offers a framework that meets children's academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs.

In our child centred inquiry we very much involve children in the implementation of our kindergarten programme that encourages them to become independent, self-organised inquirers. Child oriented learning gives teachers the opportunity to identify individual talents and it helps children to develop these at their own pace.

Classes are taught in English and are divided into two stages:

1. Kindergarten (3 to 5 years), which implements a two year ‘rolling programme’ to cover the PYP learning units (Units of Inquiry) to ensure there is no repetition for our youngest students. They will complete two years in this introductory educational phase.

2. Transition (5-6 year olds) participate fully in 6 Units of Inquiry.

Class teachers are university qualified and they are supported by experienced bilingual German Kindergarten teachers (qualified "Erzieherinnen").

Activities in German take place for one full afternoon per week in the Kindergarten classes and one hour per day in the Transition classes and are conducted by a native German-speaking teacher.
